Mobile Bay Marine Channels Forecast (MBMCF)

The Mobile Bay Marine Channel Forecast is designed to aid local pilots by providing them with meteorological and oceanographic forecasts at 19 stations located along the marine channels. Click on any station pins to view their data product.

The forecasts are provided by NOAA National Weather Service (NWS) Mobile Bay Area Weather Forecast Office and by the National Ocean Service (NOS) Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS) Northern Gulf of Mexico Operational Forecast System (NG2OFS)'s Mobile Bay subdomain. The water level observation data is from the NOS/CO-OPS Mobile Bay PORTS®.

The Northern Gulf of Mexico Operational Forecast System (NGOFS2) and Mobile Bay Marine Channels Forecast (MBMCF) have been implemented by NOAA's National Ocean Service (NOS) and National Weather Service (NWS) to provide the maritime user community with short-term forecasts of water levels, winds, currents, significant wave height and period, probability of precipitation, probability of visibility less than 1 statute mile, weather and hazards of the Mobile Bay. NGOFS2 uses a numerical hydrodynamic model to generate the nowcast and forecast information; therefore, NGOFS2 and MBMCF should be considered as model-generated forecast guidance. During extreme weather conditions, water level forecast guidance data are released for public utility and should be used with appropriate caution.

Water Level and Currents Cross-Sections


Water Level Forecast Guidance: These water level graphics were created from the latest NGOFS2 forecast guidance in the Mobile Bay. The complete forecast is for the next 48 hours of the water levels as simulated by NGOFS2 whose input is from the National Weather Service's 4km North American Model (NAM4) and Global operational Real-Time Ocean Forecast System (RTOFS).

Currents Forecast Guidance: These near surface current velocity graphics were created from the latest NGOFS2 forecast guidance in the Mobile Bay. The complete forecast is for the next 48 hours of currents as simulated by NGOFS2 whose input is from the National Weather Service's 4km North American Model (NAM4), Extra Tropical Storm Surge (ETSS) model and Global Operational Real-Time Ocean Forecast System (RTOFS).

Waves and Precipitation Cross-Sections


Probability of Precipitation Forecast: These probability of precipitation along-channel cross-sections were created from the latest NOAA/NWS National Digital Forecast Database (NDFD; http://www.nws.noaa.gov/ndfd/) guidance. The forecasts are hourly. The NDFD consists of gridded forecasts of sensible weather elements (e.g., cloud cover, maximum temperature). NDFD contains a seamless mosaic of digital forecasts from NWS field offices working in collaboration with the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP).

Significant Wave Height and Wave Period Forecast: These significant wave height along-channel cross-sections and wave period map-view graphics were created from the latest NOAA/NWS Nearshore Wave Prediction System (NWPS; https://polar.ncep.noaa.gov/nwps/) wave model guidance. The forecasts are hourly (i.e. there is a single value forecasted for each 1-hour interval). Input to NWPS is from forecaster-developed wind grids produced in AWIPS, the operational WAVEWATCH III model, the Real-Time Ocean Forecast System (RTOFS-Global), the Extratropical Surge and Tide Operational Forecast System (ESTOFS), and/or the probabilistic model P-SURGE.
