To reach the tidal bench marks from Highway 101 southbound, exit on Castillo
Street (Harbor), turn right on Castillo at end of ramp, go straight ahead 2
blocks and turn right onto Cabrillo/Shoreline Drive, proceed one long block and
turn left on Harbor Street, which is the parking lot for the harbor.  The tide
station is located upstairs in Ice House at the end of the City Pier.

The primary bench mark is a rod located in a landscaped island in the main
parking area for the harbor, 24.51 m (80.4 ft) west of Marina Gate #2, 5.09 m
(16.7 ft) WNW of the main road leading into the parking lot, and 1.01 m (3.3 ft)
south of the southern most of three palm trees which are also located in the
landscaped island.  The bench mark is set 5 cm (0.2 ft) below ground level,
being the top of a stainless steel rod, driven 16.8 m (55 ft), and encased in a
standard NGS aluminum access cover.

the railing on the SE side of the bridge which carries cabrillo boulevard over
outlet of mission creek, 95 m (312 ft) NE of the center of the "T" junction of
state street and cabrillo boulevard, and 16 m (52 ft) SE of the centerline of
cabrillo boulevard, and about 1 m (4 ft) above the sidewalk.

intersection of State Street and Cabrillo Boulevard, 22.25 m (73.0 ft) SW of the

Boulevard, 3.32 m (10.9 ft) SW of the NE rounded end of the seawall, and 0.30 m
(1.0 ft) above the sidewalk.

Cabrillo Blvd, 7.00 m (23.0 ft) NW of the fence surrounding the municipal wading
pool, and about 0.60 m (2.0 ft) above the sidewalk.

the beach, 7.77 m (25.5 ft) NW of the seawall, and 2.80 m (9.2 ft) SW of the "90
minute parking" sign.

The benchmark is located  29.57 m (97.0 ft) SW of the westerly corner of the I
Banos Del Mar Swimming pool located at the SW corner of the Marina, 10.79 m
(35.4 ft) east of the centerline of the road that leads into the north parking
lot, 0.83 m (2.7 ft) SSW of a light pole with a witness post sign, 0.60 m (2.0
ft) north of a concrete storm drain, 0.56 m (1.8 ft) east of West Cabrillo Blvd.
curb, and 0.10 m (0.33 ft) below grass level under a toilet seat lid. The bench
mark is set 10 cm (0.3 ft) below ground level, crimped to the top of a 5/8-inch
copper clad steel rod driven to a depth of 12.2 m (40 ft), and encased in a
4-inch PVC pipe set flush with ground level.

The bench mark is a rod located in a landscaped island in the main parking area
for the harbor, 29.87 m (98.0 ft) west of Marina Gate #3, 4.65 m (15.2 ft) west
of the centerline of the main road leading into the parking lot, 3.66 m (12.0
ft) NE of the south end of the island, and 0.81 m (2.7 ft) west of the east side
of the curb where an expansion crack is located.  The bench mark is set 5 cm
(0.2 ft) below ground level, being the top of a stainless steel rod, driven 19.5
m (64 ft), and encased in a standard NGS aluminum access cover.

1.31 m (4.3 ft) north of the south end of the sea wall, and 0.30 m (1.0 ft)
above the adjacent sidewalk.

Harbormaster building by continuously measuring along the curved breakwater
seawall, 59.70 m (195.9 ft) SE then east from the centerline of the entrance to
Marina One floating dock by measuring continuously along the curved sidewalk
handrail, 2.01 m (6.6 ft) NW of the sea wall, and 1.47 m (4.8 ft) SE of the
first flag pole.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
