To reach the tidal bench marks from San Diego, CA, go north on Interstate I-5
and exit onto La Jolla Parkway (which becomes Arduth Road), proceed about 3.2 km
(2 mi) and turn right onto La Jolla Village Drive, go north about 1.6 km (1.0
mi) and turn left at Discovery Way (marked Scripps Pier & Aquarium), then take
Discovery Way to the bottom of the hill (2 blocks) to the Scripps pier and
station.  The tidal bench marks are located in the vicinity of Scripps Pier. 
Tide gauges are in room in the SW corner in the building at the end of the Pier.

The primary bench mark is a disk set in top of a concrete retaining wall, 17.31
m (56.8 ft) east of SE corner of Center for Coastal Studies Building, 10.97 m
(36.0 ft) NE of the intersection of the dock and Scripps maintenance yard, 9.39
m (30.8 ft) north of centerline of Discovery Way,  0.46 m (1.5 ft) south of the
SW corner of the Benthic Laboratory Control Center, and 0.49 m (1.6 ft) above
the street level.

The bench mark is a disk set in top of a 2 m (7 ft) concrete sea wall,  30 m (98
ft) north of east end of pier, 6.10 m (20.0 ft) south of north edge of concrete
ramp leading to the beach, 3.81 m (12.5 ft) north of the NW corner of Center for
Coastal Studies Building, 0.50 m (1.6 ft) east of the point where the sea wall
makes a 130-degree turn away from the beach, and 4 m (12 ft) below pier floor.

Center for Coastal Studies, located 9 m (30 ft) north of the extended centerline
of the pier, 1.46 m (4.8 ft) north of the south edge of the top step leading to
the door to building and just outside door, and 0.15 m (0.5 ft) east of a 1.01 m
(3.3 ft) high retaining wall.

maintenance yards, 1.61 m (5.3 ft) east of the SE corner of planter, 0.21 m (0.7
ft) west of the west wall of the storehouse, and 1.07 m (3.5 ft) above ground
level.

The bench mark is a disk located 37.80 m (124.0 ft) west of the NW corner of the
Ritter Hall Building, 22.25 m (73.0 ft) NW of the NE corner of the Public
Affairs Office, 1.16 m (3.8 ft) west of the west edge of the pathway, and 0.49 m
(1.6 ft) north of an orange fiberglass witness post.  The bench mark is set 6 cm
(0.2 ft) below ground level, crimped to the top of a copper-clad 5/8-inch steel
rod driven to a depth of 12.8 m (42 ft), and encased in a 4-inch PVC pipe set in
an irregular concrete mass.

inshore pump station directly south of the inshore end of the Scripps Pier,
21.34 m (70.0 ft) SSW of a fire hydrant near the foot of the pier, 20.73 m (68.0
ft) west of the SW corner of Scholander Hall near where the round building
joins, and 0.3 m (1 ft) west of the east end of the south foot.

surrounding a storm drain manhole, located north of the Scripps pier, atop the
dirt bank above the beach, 41 m (134 ft) north of the NW corner of the Grounds
Department Garage, 11 m (36 ft) west of the SW corner of a four-store office
building, 7 m (24 ft) SE of the SE corner of a large concrete storm drain out
fall on the beach, and 0.52 m (1.7 ft) west of the center of the manhole.

The bench mark is a disk located on the SW side of Pawka Green in the east end
of the southern most bed planted with trees, 35.90 m (117.8 ft) WNW of NW corner
of Sverdrup Hall structure (not low metal wall build-out), 25.60 m (84.0 ft) SE
of SE corner of 8630 Discovery Way (Admissions Building/Old Scripps), 12.05 m
(39.5 ft) SSE of SW corner of westernmost concrete seating in Pawka Green, 8.80
m (28.9 ft) NE of center of sewer manhole cover located on the southwest end of
Pawka Green, 8.00 m (26.2 ft) WSW of 2nd streetlamp east of access rd.
(Discovery Way?) and at the south end of Pawka Green, 2.10 m (6.9 ft) SSW of the
second post to the east on the southernmost hand railing of Pawka Green.  The
bench mark is crimped to the top of a copper-clad rod driven 7.01 m (23.0 ft) to
refusal, and encased in a PVC pipe with an aluminum hatch.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
