To reach the tide station from exit 23A on I-5 North, exit I-5 North towards
Grand Avenue / Garnet Avenue and proceed north 0.5 km (0.3 mi), merge onto
Mission Bay Drive and continue 0.3 km (0.2 mi) NW to the fork where Grand Avenue
splits to the left, turn left onto Grand Avenue and proceed west 1.3km (0.8 mi)
to the intersection with Olney Street, turn left onto Olney Street and proceed
0.5 km (0.3 mi) south to the T intersection with Pacific Beach Drive, turn left
and proceed 0.1 km (0.1 mi) east on Pacific Beach Drive to the entrance to
Campland on the Bay on the right.  The tide station is at the marina and the
bench marks are in the RV park and along Pacific Beach Drive and bike trail.

The primary bench mark is a disk set in the west end of a concrete bridge for
the bike path over Rose Inlet, 12.40 m (40.7 ft) south of a corner of a wooden
fence, 10.40 m (34.1 ft) east of a light pole on north side of the path, 4.25 m
(13.9 ft) south of the edge of a curb along the north side of the path, 2.03 m
(6.7 ft) south of the centerline of the path, 0.86 m (2.8 ft) west of the corner
of a concrete curb along the south side of the bridge, and 0.12 m (0.4 ft) north
of the edge of the concrete path.

The mark is a disk set in the concrete base of a flagpole in between two palm
trees at a marina, 28.70 m (94.2 ft) SE of the NE corner of the marina building,
7.01 m (23.0 ft) east of the SE corner of the marina building, 4.27 m (14.0 ft)
SE of the closest edge of a curb around trees in a paved area east of the marina
building, 2.71 m (8.9 ft) NE of the SW palm tree, 2.21 m (7.3 ft) SW of the NE
palm tree, 1.01 m (3.3 ft) north of the edge of a curb at the top of rip-rap
above the water edge, and about 0.07 m (0.2 ft) higher than the parking lot.

east of the SE corner of a guard shack, 11.50 m (37.7 ft) NNE of the edge of the
curb along the west side of the entrance road, 3.57 m (11.7 ft) SSW of the
center of a junction box in the pavement, 3.12 m (10.2 ft) WSW of the NE corner
of the building, 2.34 m (7.7 ft) NW of the SW corner of the building, and 1.93 m
(6.3 ft) SE of the edge of a curb at the NW point in the front of the office.

The mark is a disk set in a low concrete wall on the south side of the skate
park inside of a locked gate, 21.10 m (69.2 ft) ENE of the west access gate to
the skate park, 17.01 m (55.8 ft) SSW of a light post near the NE corner of the
skate park, 10.40 m (34.1 ft) east of a light post near the SW corner of skate
park, 5.85 m (19.2 ft) SW of a light post near the SE corner of the skate park,
4.45 m (14.6 ft) north of the centerline of the road, 2.14 m (7.0 ft) WSW of the
south end of the low concrete wall on the east side of gate, 0.25 m (0.8 ft)
north of south end of a low concrete wall, and about 0.37 m (1.2 ft) higher than
the ground.

path over Rose Inlet, 33.40 m (109.6 ft) west of a warning sign at the west end
of the traffic island filled with stones, 10.40 m (34.1 ft) SW of a light post,
4.15 m (13.6 ft) south of a concrete curb on the north side of a path, 3.65 m
(12.0 ft) east of the east end of a metal bridge railing, 1.94 m (6.4 ft) south
of the centerline of path, and 0.21 m (0.7 ft) north of the north edge of a
concrete curb.

(54.3 ft) SE of a light pole at the NE corner of the intersection, 12.59 m (41.3
ft) south of the center of a concrete drainage on the east side of Olney St,
4.45 m (14.6 ft) NE of the NE corner of sidewalk along the south side of Pacific
Beach Dr, and 0.15 m (0.5 ft) lower than the street.   Note: There is no logo on
the disk.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed. The NGS's Integrated Data Base (IDB PID)
provides geodetic datum based on traditionally leveled and bluebooked ties to
the National Spatial Reference System(NSRS) https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/datasheets/.
The NGS Online Positioning User Service (OPUS PID) provides geodetic datum based
on GPS position & tie it to the NSRS https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/OPUS/.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
