To reach the tidal bench marks from the intersection of Texas Highway 87
(Broadway) and Texas Farm Road 3322 (Dowling Road) in Sabine Pass, proceed east
on Farm Road 3322 for 2.4 km (1.5 mi) to South First Avenue (7000 block), turn
right on South First Avenue and go 0.2 km (0.10 mi) to the U.S. Coast Guard
Station.  The bench marks are located inside the U.S. Coast Guard compound and
at the entrance to the compound.  The tide gauge was located on the inside
corner of the L shaped pier.

The primary bench mark is a disk set in the corner of the U.S. Coast Guard
compound near the gate to the L shaped pier, 20.97 m (68.80 ft) NE of the north
corner of the barracks, 16.61 m (54.49 ft) SW of the sheet pile bulkhead, 4.21 m
(13.81ft) SW of the center of the road, 2.80 m (9.19 ft) south of the SW gate
post of the gate to the pier, 1.01 m (3.31 ft) NE of a power pole with a street
light, and 1.01 m (3.31 ft) SE from a fiberglass witness post in a chain link
fence.  The bench mark is set 15.2 cm (0.49 ft) below the ground, crimped to the
top of a stainless steel rod driven 18.3 m (60.0 ft) to refusal, and encased in
a 4-inch PVC pipe surrounded by concrete.

Coast Guard Station, near the NW side of the Sewage Treatment Tank, 11.64 m
(38.19 ft) NW of the west corner of the pump house, 7.32 m (24.02 ft) SE of the
centerline of the entrance road to the station, 5.8 m (19.0 ft) NW of a water
spigot, and 0.94 m (3.08 ft) NE of a power pole with a light.  The bench mark is
set 6 cm (0.19 ft) below ground level, crimped to a stainless steel rod driven
14.6 m (47.9 ft) to refusal, and encased in a 5-inch PVC pipe and concrete
kickblock.

at Sabine Pass, 118 m (387.1 ft) WSW of a Texas State flag pole, 14.17 m (46.49
ft) west of the most southerly of two CSU Company underground water main
markers, 4.72 m (15.49 ft) NNW of the centerline of the park entrance road, and
2.13 m (6.99 ft) NNE of the most southerly pole of the most northerly of two
gate supports.  The bench mark is set 6 cm (0.19 ft) below ground level, crimped
to the top of a stainless steel rod driven 15.8 m (51.8 ft) to refusal, and
encased in a 6-inch PVC pipe with concrete kickblock.

northwestern most of four bunkers in a park, located pproximately 1.0 km (0.60
mi) NW of the U.S. Coast Guard Station at Sabine Pass, 64.62 m (212.0 ft) SW of
the SW face of the most northeasternly of four bunkers, 41.76 m (137.01 ft) NE
of the centerline of the park road leading to a picnic area, 2.44 m (8.01 ft)
south of the centerline of the entrance road leading to the bunker storage
doors, with witness post 1.25 m (4.10 ft) above ground level.

the flag tower, 20.6 m (67.6 ft) east of the northeasternmost corner of USCG
headquarters, 16.5 m (54.1ft) SSW of the SW corner of the Coast Guard weight
room building, and 0.40 m (1.3 ft) WSW of an old wood abutement running parallel
to the bulkhead next to Sabine pass and in between the new and old boat piers.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed. The NGS's Integrated Data Base (IDB PID)
provides geodetic datum based on traditionally leveled and bluebooked ties to
the National Spatial Reference System(NSRS) https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/datasheets/.
The NGS Online Positioning User Service (OPUS PID) provides geodetic datum based
on GPS position & tie it to the NSRS https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/OPUS/.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
