To reach the tidal bench marks from the NW end of the State Highway 1 bridge
over Caminada Pass, proceed NW on State Highway 1 to Central Avenue, then turn
right and proceed NE on Central Avenue to the second row of camps to the right
and the Bergeron camp on the bay.  The bench marks are along State Highway 1. 
The tide gage was on the NE side of a covered wharf and the tide staff was on
the NE corner pile of the bulkhead behind the camp.

The primary bench mark is a disk set in the top of the NW end of a concrete
retaining wall of the State Highway 1 bridge over Caminada Pass, 12 m (38 ft) NE
of the centerline of the highway, 0.58 m (1.9 ft) SE of the NW end of the
retaining wall, and 1 m (4 ft) below the level of the highway.

The bench mark is a disk located 8.13 km (5.05 mi) SW along State Highway 1 from
the Post Office in Grand Isle, 50.11 m (164.4 ft) SE of the centerline of the
highway, 17.80 m (58.4 ft) SW of the west corner of the concrete footing for a
large cross at Cheniere Cemetery, 12.31 m (40.4 ft) west of the west corner of a
tomb (Clarence J. Frazier Sr.), 7.59 m (24.9 ft) SE of a chain-link fence, 0.61
m (2.0 ft) below the level of the highway, and 0.21 m (0.7 ft) north of a
witness post.  The bench mark is set flush with the ground surface, a copper
clad steel rod driven 21.9 m (71.9 ft) and encased in a 5-inch metal pipe.

The bench mark is a disk located 52.46 m (172.1 ft) WNW of bench mark P 221
1965, 26.46 m (86.8 ft) SE of a fire hydrant at the corner of Central and Pitre
Avenues, 13.62 m (44.7 ft) south of telephone junction box #217 (SW of the first
utility pole on the east side of Central Avenue), 10.15 m (33.3 ft) north of the
edge of the highway, 6.55 m (21.5 ft) SE of the SW chain link fence corner at
the junction of Central Avenue and State Highway 1, 6.00 m (19.7 ft) north of a
6-inch utility pole near a speed limit sign, and 0.3 m (1.0 ft) south of a
witness post.  The bench mark is set 6 cm (0.2 ft) below ground level, crimped
to the top of a stainless steel rod driven 15.8 m (52 ft) to substantial
resistance, and encased in a 5-inch PVC pipe and concrete kickblock.

The bench mark is a disk located 76.44 m (250.8 ft) WNW of bench mark 1826 A
1986, 31.82 m (104.4 ft) SSE of a gas meter at the first camp east of Cigars
Marina, 26.73 m (87.7 ft) south of a utility pole at the east corner of a
driveway leading to the first camp east of Cigars Marina, 3.20 m (10.5 ft) north
of the edge of the highway, and 0.49 m (1.6 ft) south of a witness post.  The
bench mark is set 6 cm (0.2 ft) below ground level, crimped to the top of a
stainless steel rod driven 18.3 m (60 ft) to substantial resistance, and encased
in a 5-inch PVC pipe and concrete kickblock.

The bench mark is a disk located 77.78 m (255.2 ft) west of bench mark 1826 B
1986, 28.65 m (94.0 ft) west of telephone junction box #210 (across the highway
from Cigars Marina), 13.47 m (44.2 ft) east of telephone junction box #208, 5.61
m (18.4 ft) north of a 60-penny galvanized nail in the top of a 4 x 6-inch pile
extending 1.13 m (3.7 ft) above ground level, 3.29 m (10.8 ft) south of the edge
of the highway, and 0.49 m (1.6 ft) north of a witness post.  The bench mark is
set 6 cm (0.2 ft) below ground level, crimped to the top of a stainless steel
rod driven 18.3 m (60 ft) to substantial resistance, and encased in a 5-inch PVC
pipe and concrete kickblock.

The bench mark is a disk located 76.50 m (251.0 ft) WNW of bench mark 1826 C
1986, 11.22 m (36.8 ft) SE of the south edge of the highway, 10.88 m (35.7 ft)
west of the south corner of Buzzys Chicken Palace, 8.29 m (27.2 ft) south of
telephone junction box #206 (at the west corner of Buzzys Chicken Palace), 0.94
m (3.1 ft) east of the north corner of a concrete slab across State Highway 1
from Tel Star Seafood, and 0.43 m (1.4 ft) north of a witness post.  The bench
mark is set 6 cm (0.2 ft) below ground level, crimped to the top of a stainless
steel rod driven 17.1 m (56 ft) to substantial resistance, and encased in a
5-inch PVC pipe and concrete kickblock.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
