To reach the tidal bench marks from the intersection of U.S. Highway 41 and 5th
Avenue South in Naples, proceed west on 5th Avenue South for 1.1 km (0.7 mi) to
Gulf Shore Boulevard South, go south on Gulf Shore Boulevard South for 1.0 km
(0.6 mi) to 12th Avenue South.  The bench marks are located along 12th Avenue
South, Gordon Drive, and 3rd Street South.  The tide gage and staff are located
about half way out on the municipal pier at the end of 12th Avenue South.

The primary bench mark is a disk set in top of a coral boulder, in Naples at the
intersection of 12th Avenue South and Gulf Shore Boulevard, 118.0 m (387.1 ft)
west of the center line of the boulevard, 4.80 m (15.7 ft) NE of the SE corner
of a men's restroom, 4.30 m (14.1 ft) north of the extended center of the avenue
and a pier, 0.40 m (1.3 ft) SE of the NE end of a handrail, 0.1 m (0.3 ft) east
of the west edge of the coral boulder, and 0.30 m (1.0 ft) above ground level.

witness post.  The bench mark is 0.30 m (1.0 ft) below ground level, crimped to
a copper-clad steel rod driven 26.8 m (88 ft) to refusal, and encased in a
4-inch metal pipe.

swimming pool at the Mariner Apartments Motel, 1295 Gulf Shore Boulevard South,
5.39 m (17.7 ft) south of the center of an alley, 2.90 m (9.5 ft) NW of the NW
corner of the pool, 0.79 m (2.6 ft) east of the corner of the building, 0.61 m
(2.0 ft) SE of the NE corner of a sidewalk surrounding the pool, 0.40 m (1.3 ft)
south of a chain link fence, and 0.30 m (1.0 ft) above the level of the alley.

an unmarked utility pole, 3.41 m (11.2 ft) north of and level with the center of
the alley, 1.89 m (6.2 ft) south of the SE curb of a parking lot, 0.49 m (1.6

number 1220, and at ground level.

of the boulevard, 1.10 m (3.6 ft) NW of the NW corner of a municipal parking
lot, 1.01 m (3.3 ft) north of a palm tree, and 0.30 (1.0 ft) below ground level
inside a PVC pipe and logo cap.

(12.5 ft) SW of the NW corner of the building, 0.1 m (0.3 ft) SE of the NW
corner of the top concrete step, and 0.40 m (1.3 ft) above the level of the
street.

intersection of 3rd Street South and Broad Avenue South, 16.40 m (53.8 ft) south
of and level with the centerline of the avenue, 7.71 m (25.3 ft) west of the
centerline of the street, and 2.30 m (7.5 ft) ESE of a support post for a
pedestrian crossing signal.  The bench mark is set 6 cm (0.2 ft) below the level
of the sidewalk, crimped to the top of a stainless steel rod driven 6.1 m (20
ft), and encased in a 4-inch PVC pipe.

of Gordon Drive and 11th Avenue South, 25 m (82 ft) ESE of the SE corner of the
South Beach Club apartment building, 14.0 m (46 ft) NW of the centerline
intersection of 3rd Street South and 11th Avenue South, and 1.71 m (5.6 ft) west
of the western curb along 3rd Street South.  The bench mark is set 9 cm (0.3 ft)
below ground level, crimped to the top of a stainless steel rod driven 19.5 m
(64 ft) to refusal, and encased in a PVC pipe and concrete kickblock.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed. The NGS's Integrated Data Base (IDB PID)
provides geodetic datum based on traditionally leveled and bluebooked ties to
the National Spatial Reference System(NSRS) https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/datasheets/.
The NGS Online Positioning User Service (OPUS PID) provides geodetic datum based
on GPS position & tie it to the NSRS https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/OPUS/.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
