To reach the tidal bench marks from the junction of U.S. Highway 1 and State
Road A1A south in Fort Pierce, go east on State Road A1A South for 1.45 km (0.9
mi) to the junction of a paved road on the left paralleling State Road A1A
South, turn left on the paved road and go north then west for 0.40 km (0.25 mi)
to the dead end and the end of truck travel.  The tide gage is on the left
attached to the SE end of the old bridge pier, about 1.52 m (5.0 ft) below the
level of the fishing pier.  The tidal bench marks are in the vicinity of the
fishing pier and State Road A1A South.

The primary bench mark is a flange-encased rod located 69.80 m (229.0 ft) SE of
tidal mark 2219 B 1998, 30.02 m (98.5 ft) SE SE of the approximate centerline of
the State Road A1A south overpass, 28.96 m (95.0 ft) NE of the east side of the
inlet, 20.97 m (68.8 ft) ESE of the approximate center of the fishing pier, 2.13
m (7.0 ft) SE of the NW corner of a 3.05 m (10.0 ft) tall chainlink fence, 0.30
m (1.0 ft) SW of the 3.05 m (10.0 ft) tall chainlink fence and 0.27 m (0.9 ft)
SW of a carsonite witness post.  The datum point is recessed 0.06 m (0.2 ft)
below the level of the NGS logo cap, being the top of a stainless steel rod
driven to refusal at a depth of 16.46 m (54.0 ft), encased in a 5-inch NGS logo
cap flush with the ground.  A magnet was placed inside the NGS logo cap.

(32.1 ft) NE of another manhole cover, and 6.40 m (21.0 ft) north of the
approximate centerline of Seaway Drive.

The bench mark is disk set in the top of a concrete monument recessed 0.03 m
(0.1 ft) below the level of the ground, 69.80 m (229.0 ft) NW of tidal mark 2219
A 1998, 39.32 m (129.0 ft) SE of the approximate centerline of the State Road
A1A south overpass, about 12.50 m (41.0 ft) NE of the east side of the Indian
River Inlet, 7.53 m (24.7 ft) SE of the approximate center of a wooden dock,
2.84 m (9.3 ft) SE of a pipe (standpipe, 32-inch tall), and 0.52 m (1.7 ft) NW
of a 12.24 cm (6-inch) square wooden post 109.22 cm (43-inch tall).  A magnet
was imbedded in the ground on the west side of the monument.

ft) NE of the NE corner of the parking lot, 2.19 m (7.2 ft) SE of a 12-inch palm
tree, 1.68 m (5.5 ft) NW of a 12-inch oak tree, 0.49 m (1.6 ft) SE of a
carsonite witness post and power pole number 02410030 with one transformer, one
light and one guy wire, and 0.46 m (1.5 ft) north of the NE corner of a wooden
guardrail.  A magnet was imbedded in the ground on the west side of the
monument.

(2.5 ft) north of the north side of the sidewalk.  The datum point is recessed
0.06 m (0.2 ft) below the level of the NGS logo cap, being the top of a
stainless steel rod driven to refusal at a depth of 17.53 m (57.5 ft), encased
in a 5-inch NGS logo cap flush with the ground.  A magnet was placed inside of
the NGS logo Cap.

Geodetic heights of the bench marks meet all NOAA/NOS/NGS quality control
standards for Second Order, Class 1 leveling.  It is advised that a confirmation
set of levels be established for bench marks 2219 D 1998, 2219 E 1998, and
PIERCE 2 1963 NO 5 1971 to verify height differences before using tidal bench
mark elevation information.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed. The NGS's Integrated Data Base (IDB PID)
provides geodetic datum based on traditionally leveled and bluebooked ties to
the National Spatial Reference System(NSRS) https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/datasheets/.
The NGS Online Positioning User Service (OPUS PID) provides geodetic datum based
on GPS position & tie it to the NSRS https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/OPUS/.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
