To reach the tidal bench marks from the intersection of Heckscher Drive and U.S.
Highway 17 in Jacksonville, proceed north along U.S. Highway 17 for 3.4 km (2.1
mi) to the bridge over Broward River.  The bench marks are located along U.S.
Highway 17.  The tide gage and staff were located on a catwalk, 5 m (18 ft) east
of the north end of the bridge.

The primary bench mark is a disk set in a curb, inside the guard rail on the NW
corner of the northbound U.S. Highway 17 (North Main Street) bridge over Broward
River, 4.7 m (15.5 ft) NW of the centerline of the north bound roadway, 0.2 m
(0.7 ft) NE of the end of the bridge span, 0.4 m (1.4 ft) SE of the inside face
of the bridge rail, and 6.0 cm (0.2 ft) above the level of the roadway.

The bench mark is a disk set flush in the headwall of a box culvert located near
Oceanway, 78.6 m (258 ft) south of the Interstate 295 overpass on the east side
of U.S. Highway 17, 20.4 m (67.0 ft) east of the centerline of the northbound
lanes of U.S. Highway 17, 16.2 m (53.0 ft) east of a storm sewer located at the
north point of a triangular median, and 0.09 m (0.3 ft) west of a carsonite
witness post, and 1 m (3 ft) below highway level.  The mark has been defaced and
the stamping is illegible.

The bench mark is a disk set in the top of the west concrete headwall of a
24-inch pipe culvert in Oceanway, 15.5 m (51.0 ft) east of the easternmost
railroad track, 12.5 m (41.0 ft) NW of the center of the junction of the highway
and Alabama Avenue, 9.2 m (30.2 ft) west of the highway centerline, 8.9 m (29.2
ft) north of the extended center of Alabama Avenue, 0.9 m (3.0 ft) west of the
west edge of a 5-foot concrete sidewalk, 0.3 m (1.0 ft) below the level of the
highway, 0.3 m (1.0 ft) east of a carsonite post, and 0.2 m (0.7 ft) north of
the south end of the west concrete headwall.

The bench mark is a disk set in the top of a round concrete monument recessed
0.1 m (0.3 ft) below the level of the ground, 0.2 m (0.2 mi) south of Eastport
Road at the entrance to Nutri Turf, Inc. at 11650 North Main Street, on the west
side of U. S. Highway 17 and the railroad, 24.6 m (80.7 ft) SW and across the
railroad tracks from a railroad switch stand at the south end of a railroad
siding, 14.2 m (46.5 ft) west of the west main rail, 9.1 m (30.0 ft) north of
the approximate center of the Nutri Turf entrance driveway, 7.0 m (23.0 ft) SW
of the SW corner of a storm drain, 4.3 m (14.0 ft) ENE of wooden power pole No.
11480 A, 1.4 m (4.7 ft) SSW of the center of a water meter valve box, and 0.3 m
(1.0 ft) east of carsonite and metal witness posts.  NOTE:  A magnet was buried
at the south side of the mark.

northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 17 and about 0.6 m (2.0 ft) below the level of
U.S. Highwasy 17, 0.9 m (2.9 ft) west of the east end of the abutment, and 0.3 m
(1.0 ft) south of the north edge of the abutment.

Geodetic heights of the bench marks meet all NOAA/NOS/NGS quality control
standards for Second Order, Class 1 leveling.  It is advised that a confirmation
set of levels be established for bench mark 0189 D 2004 to verify height
differences before using tidal bench mark elevation information.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed. The NGS's Integrated Data Base (IDB PID)
provides geodetic datum based on traditionally leveled and bluebooked ties to
the National Spatial Reference System(NSRS) https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/datasheets/.
The NGS Online Positioning User Service (OPUS PID) provides geodetic datum based
on GPS position & tie it to the NSRS https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/OPUS/.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
