To reach the tidal bench marks from the intersection of U.S. Highway 17 State
Road A1A (State Road 200) in Yulee, go 3.5 km (2.2 mi) south to Harts Road, turn
left and go SE Harts Road for 1.4 m (0.9 mi) through a series of left, right,
left turns to the junction of Haddock Road and Wilson Neck Road, turn right and
go south 0.3 m (0.2 mi) to the residence at 1456 Avant Road.  The bench marks
are located along Wilson Neck and Avant Roads.  The tide gage and staff were
located on a dock behind the residence.

The primary bench mark is a disk set flush in a concrete culvert head wall at
the NE corner of the intersection of Wilson Neck and Elise Roads, 16 m (52.5 ft)
south of a wood power pole, 9.1 m (30.0 ft) east of the intersection of Wilson
Neck and Elise Roads, 6.6 m (21.6 ft) NE of the centerline of Wilson Neck Road,
6.3 m (20.7 ft) SE of the centerline of Elise Road, 0.2 m (0.1 mi) NW Avant
Road, and 0.5 m (1.7 ft) NE of the SW end of the head wall.

The bench mark is a disk set in the top of a round concrete monument flush with
the ground and about level with Harts Road, 32.1 m (105.4 ft) SSE of a 14-inch
wood power pole on the south side of Harts Road, 31.3 m (103 ft) NNW of a
14-inch cedar tree, 19.5 m (64 ft) south of the centerline intersection of Harts
Road, 9.7 m (31.8 ft) SW of the centerline of Harts Road, 1.2 m (3.8 ft) south
of an 8-inch wood fence post with a metal witness sign and 0.2 m (0.5 ft) NE of
a carsonite witness post.  NOTE:  A magnet was buried on the south side of the
mark.

The bench mark is a disk located 10.27 m (33.7 ft) NNE of the centerline of
Avant Road, 1.82 m (6.0 ft) NW of a wooden anchor pole, 1.52 m (5.0 ft) SW of a
4-inch square concrete property corner post, and 0.91 m (3.0 ft) south of a 1.22
m (4.0 ft) high chain link fence and carsonite witness post.  The bench mark is
crimped to the top of a stainless steel rod driven to refusal at a depth of
16.55 m (54.3 ft) with a 5-inch NGS logo cap, flush with the ground, recessed
0.09 m (0.3 ft) below the level of the NGS logo cap and .  NOTES:  Access to the
datum point is had through the 5-inch NGS logo cap.  A magnet was buried at the
south side of the mark.

the ground and about level with Avant Road, 9.8 (32.2 ft) east of the junction
of Wilson Neck Road and Avant Road, 3.2 m (10.5 ft) NE of wooden power pole
number 14304891902, 2.43 m (8.0 ft) north of the corner post of a 1.22 m (4.0
ft) high metal fence and 0.88 m (2.9 ft) NW of a concrete guard rail post and
carsonite witness post.  NOTE:  A Magnet was buried at the south side of the
mark.

wooden electric service pole, and 0.15 m (0.5 ft) SE of a carsonite witness

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed. The NGS's Integrated Data Base (IDB PID)
provides geodetic datum based on traditionally leveled and bluebooked ties to
the National Spatial Reference System(NSRS) https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/datasheets/.
The NGS Online Positioning User Service (OPUS PID) provides geodetic datum based
on GPS position & tie it to the NSRS https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/OPUS/.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
