To reach the tidal bench marks from the intersection of Spring Garden Street and
State Highway 73 in the village of Palmyra, proceed NE on Spring Garden Street
for 0.3 km (0.2 mi) to Public Road, then turn right and proceed SE on Public
Road for 0.3 km (0.2 mi) to the point where Public Road becomes Fairfax Drive. 
The bench marks are located near house No. 198, and across Pennsauken Creek
along State Highway 73.  The tide gage and staff were located on an abandoned
stone bridge abutment.

The primary bench mark is a disk located 19.72 m (64.7 ft) SW of the north curb
of Fairfax Drive, 13.59 m (44.6 ft) NW of the NW corner of house at 198 Fairfax
Drive, 11.34 m (37.2 ft) NE of a wood utility pole #BT5-206CN, and 2.16 m (7.1
ft) south of wood utility pole #2319 CN.  The bench mark is set 6 cm (0.2 ft)
below ground level, crimped to the top of a copper-clad steel rod driven 9.4 m
(31 ft) to refusal, and encased in a PVC pipe and concrete kickblock.

The bench mark is a disk set on top of the NE corner of the bridge abutment, 61
m (200 ft) south and across the creek from bench mark 8853 A 1977, 8.02 m (26.3
ft) NE of wood utility pole #206, 7.13 m (23.4 ft) SE of the NW corner of the
abutment, and 1.22 m (4.0 ft) SW of the NE corner of the abutment.  NOTE:
4/1989, NJGS: Due to requirement for heavy cutting, mark is not accessible for
leveling.

The bench mark is a disk located 0.2 km (0.1 mi) south of bench mark 8853 B
1977, 31.79 m (104.3 ft) NE of a wood utility pole, 18.50 m (60.7 ft) NE of the
SE corner of a steel catch basin on the east curb of State Highway 73, 12.95 m
(42.5 ft) east of the SE corner of a traffic control box, and 5.85 m (19.2 ft)
west of the west curb of the exit lane to Union Avenue.  The bench mark is set 6
cm (0.2 ft) below ground level, crimped to the top of a copper-clad steel rod
driven 14.3 m (47 ft) to refusal, and encased in a PVC pipe and concrete
kickblock.

The bench mark is a disk located 48.55 m (159.3 ft) NW of bench mark 8853 C
1977, 11.13 m (36.5 ft) north of wood utility pole #P66426, 7.68 m (25.2 ft) NW
of the southernmost steel column of a wooden billboard, and 3 m (10 ft) NE of
the SE corner of a catch basin on the east curb of Highway 73.  The bench mark
is set 6 cm (0.2 ft) below ground level, crimped to a copper-clad steel rod
driven 15.2 m (50 ft) to refusal, and encased in a PVC pipe and concrete
kickblock.

The bench mark is a disk set in the NW corner of the bridge abutment, about 0.3
km (0.2 mi) NW of bench mark 8853 D 1977, 5.18 m (17.0 ft) SE of wood utility
pole #1051P, 3.47 m (11.4 ft) NE of the east curb of Highway 73, 0.94 m (3.1 ft)
east of the south end of a chainlink fence, and 0.30 m (1.0 ft) west of the
river face of the abutment.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed. The NGS's Integrated Data Base (IDB PID)
provides geodetic datum based on traditionally leveled and bluebooked ties to
the National Spatial Reference System(NSRS) https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/datasheets/.
The NGS Online Positioning User Service (OPUS PID) provides geodetic datum based
on GPS position & tie it to the NSRS https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/OPUS/.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
