To reach the tidal bench marks from Interstate I-278 (Brooklyn Queens
Expressway) in Brooklyn, take exit # 29B west off of I-278 and follow to Cadman
Plaza West NW to Water Street.  Turn right (NE) on to Water Street and turn left
immediately into the valet entrance for River Cafe Restaurant.  Proceed NW and
then NE ashort distance to a wrought iron gate at the entrance to the Fulton
Ferry Esplanade, a public park facility open daily from 9 am to 9 pm.  The bench
marks are located in and around the park property, and to the SE along the
bridge piers and approaches.  The gauge was located on the south side of the
bridge, east edge of the river, at the SW corner of the park area, attached to
the face of the bulkhead adjacent to the facility.

the pier which is the first pier of Manhattan Bridge north of York Street, in
the Borough of Brooklyn in New York City, at the intersection of Pearl and York
Street, 21 m (69 ft) north of the north curb of York Street, 7.92 m (26.0 ft)
west of the west curb of Pearl Street, 1.83 m (6.0 ft) west of a fence line, and
1.52 m (5.0 ft) above the sidewalk.

course of masonry of the large masonry pier of the Brooklyn Bridge, in the
Borough of Brooklyn in New York City, along the main street near the
intersection of Prospect Street, 14.63 m (48.0 ft) north of the north curb of
Main Street, 1.01 m (3.3 ft) south of the NW corner of the pier, 0.70 m (2.3 ft)
above the sidewalk, and directly below letters BM cut in stone.

City, 13.40 m (44.0 ft) west of the SW corner of the first pier of the Brooklyn
Bridge east of the East River, 6.40 m (21.0 ft) south of a 12-inch diameter
bollard at the edge of the bulkhead, 0.10 m (0.3 ft) SE of the NW end of the
0.61 m (2.0 ft) wide fence foundation, and 0.20 m (0.7 ft) above the cobblestone
surface of the Esplanade area.

end of New Dock Street at the east bank of the East River on the NE side of the
Fulton Ferry Esplanade at the east end of the Brooklyn Bridge in the Borough of
Brooklyn in New York City, 10.10 m (33.1 ft) north of Power Pole No. 15 (at the
NW end of New Dock Street), 3.30 m (10.8 ft) east of a 0.46 m x 0.69 m (1.5 ft x
2.25 ft) brick column supporting the gate at the NE entrance to the Fulton Ferry
Esplanade, and 0.20 m (0.7 ft) west of the west curb of New Dock Street
extended.

connection in warehouse wall, 0.70 m (2.3 ft) south of the brick face of the
warehouse, 0.20 m (0.7 ft) east of the stone steps measuring 1.83 m (6.0 ft)
wide, and 0.15 m (0.5 ft) above the surface of the sidewalk.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
