To reach the tidal bench marks from the south point of the traffic circle at the
south end of the Robert Moses Causeway on Fire Island, proceed east on the park
road for 0.5 mile (0.8 km) to a turnaround and then head back west for 0.2 mile
(0.1 km) to the entrance to Fire Island Coast Guard Station, then follow the
entrance road west to the station boat basin on Fire island Inlet.  The bench
marks are near the station and east along the park road.  The tide gage and
staff were on the outside of the west bulkhead of the boat basin.

The primary bench mark is set flush in the NW corner of the square concrete base
of the antenna tower,  102 feet (31 m) south of the SW corner of the boat basin
dock, 95.2 feet (29.0 m) north of the NW corner of the maintenance building,
14.3 feet (4.4 m) west of a chain link fence, and 0.5 foot (0.2 m) below the top
surface of the round steel base of the antenna.

The bench mark is set in a granite foundation block on the north side of the
Fire Island Lighthouse tower, in the circular rim of the lighthouse,
approximately 2.2 miles (3.5 km) east of Fire Island Coast Guard Station, and
1.5 feet (0.5 m) above the brick terrace built around the lighthouse.

The bench mark is set in the top of a 3 x 3-foot (1x1 m) concrete base of a
former tower, in the most southern one of three bases, at the Fire Island Coast
Guard Radio Station, 1.3 miles (2.1 km) west along Dune road from the water tank
at Saltaire, 71.8 feet (21.9 m) SE of the SW corner of the radio station
building, and 59.4 feet (18.1 m) south of the south side of the building.

The bench mark is set in the top of a 4 x 5.6-foot (1x1.7 m) concrete base of a
former radio tower at the Fire Island Coast Guard Radio Station, 172 feet (52 m)
east of the NE corner of the radio station building, and 170 feet (52 m) east of
the radio tower.

The bench mark is set flush near the center of the concrete helicopter pad,
131.2 feet (40.0 m) SE of the SE corner of the wood-sided boat house, 64.2 feet
(19.6 m) north of the south corner of the pad, and 62.6 feet (19.1 m) west of
the east corner of the pad.

Moses Causeway over Fire Island Inlet, 16.0 feet (4.9 m) SE of the centerline of
the highway, 15.8 feet (4.8 m) north of the SE inside corner of the wingwall,
and 0.85 foot (0.26 m) SW of the NE edge of the abutment.

The bench mark is set in a concrete monument near the entrance lane to Field 4,
0.25 mile (0.40 km) east of Bench Mark 5 580, 41.8 feet (12.7 m) SW of a painted
cross in the pavement with a chiseled X in the center, 23.8 feet (7.3 m) SE of a
railroad spike with chiseled X set in the seam of the concrete pavement along
the edge of the road, and 14.3 feet (4.4 m) south of the edge of the pavement.

the traffic circle at the south end of the Robert Moses Causeway, 53.7 feet
(16.4 m) SE of a railroad spike with chiseled cross set near the edge of the
road, 51.9 feet (15.8 m) SW of a second spike in the road near a sign for the
Coast Guard Station--Fields 2&3, 26.2 feet (8.0 m) SSE of a third spike along
the centerline of the road, and 13.1 feet (4.0 m) south of the edge of the
pavement.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
