To reach the tidal bench marks from State Highway 25A and 83 at Mt Sinai,
proceed east on State Highway 25A for 1.2 miles     (1.9 km), turn left onto
Pipe Stave Hollow Road and go 2.1 miles (3.4 km) to its end, turn left onto
Harbor Beach Road and go 0.5 mile (0.8 km) to the entrance to Cedar Beach Park,
continue through the parking lot and along the park road for 0.8 mile    (1.3
km) to the road's end.  The bench marks are along the park road.  The tide gauge
and staff were on a fishing pier in the inlet.

The primary bench mark is near the foot of a boardwalk leading from the road to
the fishing pier, 143 feet (44 m) NW of power pole #84, 84.5 feet (25.8 m) east
of the east face of the fishing pier, 22.6 feet (6.9 m) WSW of a fire hydrant,
7.0 feet (2.1 m) north of the centerline of the southernmost boardwalk leading
to the pier, and about 1 foot (0.3 m) below the boardwalk.  The bench mark is
crimped to a stainless steel rod driven to a depth of 52 feet (16 m), and
encased in a 5-inch PVC pipe and concrete kickblock.

The bench mark is on the north side of the park road near Old Man's Boatyard,
151 feet (46 m) NW of the western wood post at the Old Man's Boatyard driveway,
143.0 feet (43.6 m) east of a fire hydrant, 17.0 feet (5.2 m) NW of power pole
#78, 2.4 feet (0.7 m) WSW of an orange witness post, and 0.2 foot (0.1 m) below
ground.  The bench mark is crimped to a stainless steel rod driven to a depth of
52 feet (16 m), and encased in a 5-inch PVC pipe and concrete kickblock.

The bench mark is on the north side of the park road near Old Man's Boatyard,
100.7 feet (30.7 m) NE of the centerline of the easternmost gate to Old Man's
Boatyard, 93.5 feet (28.5 m) NW of the NE corner of an 8-foot (2 m) chain link
at the boatyard, 11.8 feet (3.6 m) SW of a witness post, 2.6 feet (0.8 m) north
of power pole #72, and 0.2 foot (0.1 m) below the road surface.  The bench mark
is crimped to a stainless steel rod driven to a depth of 52 feet (16 m), and
encased in a 5-inch PVC pipe and concrete kickblock.

feet (19.4 m) NW of a fire hydrant, 22.5 feet (6.9 m) west of the center of the
entrance gate of the drive leading to the nature center, 21.3 feet (6.5 m) north
of the centerline of the park road, and 0.2 foot (0.1 m) below the road.  The
bench mark is crimped to a stainless steel rod driven to a depth of 52 feet (16
m), and encased in a 5-inch PVC pipe and concrete kickblock.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
