To reach the tidal bench marks from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge toll booths travel
5.1 miles (8.2 km) east on Route 301, turn left onto State Road 18, continue 4.0
miles (6.4 km) on State Road 18 bearing left at a Y just past the town, turn
right onto Pier Avenue and drive 0.3 mile (0.5 km) to the entrance to the
Langenfelder Company. The bench marks are located on the Langenfelder Company
property. The staff and tide gage were located on the old ferry slip.

The bench mark is set flush in a concrete monument at ground level located on
the north side of the Langenfelder Company entrance road, 304.0 feet (92.7 m)
east of the entrance gate to the Langenfelder Company yard, 100.5 feet (30.6 m)
west of power pole #185, 92.3 feet (28.l m) north of the north face of the
concrete sea wall on the south side of the yard, 50.0 feet (15.2 m) ESE of power
pole #184, and adjacent to an orange witness post.

The bench mark is set in the western end of a concrete sea wall in the front
yard of a private lot on the south side of Pier Avenue, 88.9 feet (27.1 m) south
of power pole #128, 49.0 feet (14.9 m) ENE of the NE corner of the porch of the
house on the lot, just west of the chain link fence bordering the Langenfelder
Company property, and adjacent to an orange witness post.

The bench mark is located on north side of entrance road to the Langenfelder
Company property, 133.0 feet (40.5 m) NW of a SW chimney of a two-story office,
112.5 feet (34.3 m) NW of gas pump near SW corner of office, 89.1 feet (27.2 m)
NNW of the eastern-most telephone pole on the north side of the entrance road,
75.6 feet (23.0 m) NNE of a shell paved access road, 19.0 feet (5.8 m) NNE of
the eastern-most tree of a line of trees along the north side of the entrance
road, and 0.4 foot (0.1 m) south of an orange witness post. The bench mark is
crimped to a stainless steel rod driven 56 feet (17 m) to refusal, and encased
in a 4-inch PVC pipe with a PVC cap.

The bench mark is located on north side of the Langenfelder Company entrance
road, 213.7 feet (65.1 m) NW of Bench Mark NO 5 1971, 108.6 feet (33.1 m) ESE of
the north gate post at the entrance to the Langenfelder Company property, 106.0
feet (32.3 m) SE of the SE corner of a cement slab for a small shed, 70.5 feet
(21.5 m) NNE of the centerline of the road, 0.4 foot (0.1 m) south of an orange
witness post, and in line with the second tree of a line of trees on north side
of the road and the first telephone pole from the entrance to the Langenfelder
Company. The bench mark is crimped to a stainless steel rod driven 44 feet (13
m) to refusal, and encased in a 4-inch PVC pipe with PVC cap.

D E F I N I T I O N S
Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch. It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).
NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint. NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights. Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at
National Geodetic Survey.
NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded. NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads. NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929. Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at
National Geodetic Survey.
NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.
The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed.
The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum. As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
