To reach the tidal bench marks from the intersection of U.S. Highway 1 and State
Highway 3 proceed SE along Highway 3 from Ellsworth to Bar Harbor. Then from
the Post Office in downtown Bar Harbor continue 0.3 mile (0.5 km) ENE on Cottage
Street to the intersection of Main Street (Route 3) and Cottage Street, continue
0.1 mile (0.2 km) NNW on Main Street turn right to the municipal pier and gage
site. The bench marks are in the near area.

The bench mark is west of the foot of Main Street in Bar Harbor, at the SE
corner of the municipal pier and, SW corner of the boat ramp, 55.0 feet (16.8 m)
east of the centerline of the pier parking lot, 30.3 feet (9.2 m) NW of the most
westerly point of the curb on the east side of the boat ramp, and 10.5 feet (3.2
m) west of the centerline of the ramp. The bench mark is 0.3 foot (0.1 m) above
the parking lot.

0.6 foot (0.2 m) south of the south face of the Post Office. The bench mark is
3.7 feet (1.1 m) above ground level.

bedrock. the bench mark is set in the granite, 1.25 feet (0.38 m) above ground
level.

the edge of the boat ramp. The bench mark is set in top of a granite block of
the seawall.

feet (1.1 m) east of the east face of the tide gage house. The bench mark is
set flush in concrete in the walkway surrounding the pier parking lot.

centerline of West Street, 7.8 feet (2.4 m) south of the granite curb around the
sidewalk. The bench mark is 1.2 feet (0.4 m) above the parking pavement.

the entrance to Tripps Restaurant parking lot on the north side of the parking
lot facing Main Street, 66.7 feet (20.3 m) north of Tripps Restaurant main
entrance, 26.0 feet (7.9 m) west of the centerline of Main Street, 2.5 feet (0.7
m) south of the fire hydrant encircled by the rock wall set level with the
sidewalk.

23.2 feet (7.1 m) east of the NW corner of the bulkhead, set 0.2 foot (0.1 m)
above the sidewalk.

bathing beach SE of the muncipal pier at Bar Harbor, 183.5 feet (59.0 m) SE of
the intersection of the NW end of the sea wall, 40.6 feet (12.4 m) SSE of the
entrance ramp leading to the public beach, 9.8 feet (3.0 m) north of the walkway
around the park, 4.5 feet (1.4 m) below the walkway around the Bar Harbor Motor
Inn. The bench mark is set vertically into the concrete, midway between the top
and bottom of the wall. Note: Bench mark historically referred to as NO 6 1911.

D E F I N I T I O N S
Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch. It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).
NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint. NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights. Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at
National Geodetic Survey.
NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded. NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads. NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929. Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at
National Geodetic Survey.
NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.
The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed.
The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum. As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
