To reach the tidal bench marks from ferry:  Head west toward the Alaska Railroad
pier.  Gauge is located in the SW corner of the Cruise Ship Terminal building
located on the pier.    To reach the tidal bench marks from Highway:  Route 1
(Seward Highway) from Anchorage or Homer to Route 9 to Seward; as soon as you
enter Seward look for boat harbor.  Prior to reaching the boat harbor make a
left on Port Avenue. L ook for the large wooden Alaska Railroad sign on the
south side of Port Ave.  Turn right just before reaching the sign.  This road
will lead to the Alaska Railroad pier.  Gauge is located in the SW corner of the
Cruise Ship Terminal building located on the pier.  Note:  Tide the tide station
is located in a MARSEC regulated area; permission must be granted prior to
access some of the bench marks.

Port Avenue, 76.00 m (249.3 ft) north of bench mark Tidal BM 26 1975, 19.51 m
(64.0 ft) east of southern terminus of east rail of railroad tracks leading to
the Seward Fisheries Processing Plant, 6.80 m (22.3 ft) north of the centerline
of Port Avenue, 0.10 m (0.3 ft) from the south edge of the second step and 0.37
m (l.2 ft) above ground.

D11-38 with witness sign attached. The bench mark is set 0.15 m (0.5 ft) below
grade, crimped to the top of a copper clad rod driven 7.32 m (24.0 ft) to
refusal and encased in a 6-inch PVC pipe with aluminum logo cover which projects
0.10 m (0.3 ft) above the natural grade

(6.9 ft) south of the SE corner of the Alaska Railroad Passenger Terminal, 1.49
m (4.9 ft) west of the gate leading to the electrical transformer enclosure, and
0.14 m (0.45 ft) above ground.

roll-up door, 4.25 m (13.9 ft) SW of utility pole "R I63 SF 24 3E 1M", and 0.65
m (2.1 ft) NW of the blue enclosure protecting the water tank pump controls on
the west end of the water tank.

and the westernmost road leading to the Alaska Railroad Pier, 11.20 m (36.7 ft)

(30.2 ft) SSW of the easternmost guardrail support on the south side of Port
Avenue, 3.95 m (13.0 ft) SE of utility pole "23", and 1.15 m (3.8 ft) east of
the NE corner post of the chain link fence surrounding the coal terminal
conveyor belt. The bench mark is set flush with the ground being the top of a
stainless steel rod driven 25.9 m (85.0 ft) to refusal and encased in a 6-inch
PVC pipe and aluminum logo cover which projects 0.20 m (0.6 ft) above the grade.

pole, 4.60 m (15.1 ft) SE of the flow meter on west side of the cyclone fence,
and 0.90 m (3.0 ft) east of the cyclone fence near the southernmost end of the
fence line with a metal witness post attached. The bench mark is set flush with
the ground, being the top of a stainless steel rod driven 15.39 m (50.5 ft) to
refusal and encased in a 6-inch PVC pipe and aluminum logo cover.

the coal terminal conveyor belt, 1.71 m (5.6 ft) west of a sign post that has a
"Do Not Enter" and a "No Parking" sign on it and 0.88 m (2.9 ft) east of the
cyclone fence with metal witness post attached. The bench mark is set flush with
the ground, being the top of a stainless steel rod driven 26.97 m (88.5 ft) to
refusal and encased in a 6-inch PVC pipe and aluminum logo cover.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
