To reach the station from the Quinault Indian Nation headquarters at 1214 Aalis
Drive in Tahola, proceed west 0.16 km (0.1 mi) on Aalis Drive to the
intersection with SR 109, turn right and proceed north 1.0 km (0.6 mi) on SR 109
to the bridge over the Quinault River.  The tide station is in the center of the
bridge and the bench marks are along SR 109 from the bridge to the Quinault
Indian Nation Headquarters and the Quinault Indian Nation Health Center on Kla
Ook Wa Drive.

The primary bench mark is a disk set in the bridge abutment on the west side of
the road at the north end of the bridge over the Quinault River, 93.24 m (305.9
ft) north of WS DOT survey mark GP14109-32 in the sidewalk at the center of the
bridge, 10.05 m (33.0 ft) WNW of the SW corner of the concrete box for the
pipeline, 5.93 m (19.5 ft) WNW of the road centerline, and 0.62 m (2.0 ft) south
of the north end of the concrete bridge railing.

The bench mark is a flange-encased rod set in the grass where the pedestrian
trail turns east away from SR 109, 35.95 m (117.9 ft) ESE of the centerline of
sr 109, 33.98 m (111.5 ft) SE of the south end of a 0.75 m (2.5 ft) diameter
HDPE drain pipe along the east side of SR 109, 19.65 m (64.5 ft) WNW of a 6 ft
(1.8 m) tall chain link fence, and 6.84 m (22.4 ft) SSW of the centerline of the
asphalt trail.  The datum point is set 6 cm (2 inches) below grade, being the
top of a stainless steel rod driven 4.9 m (16.1 ft) to refusal, and encased in a
6-inch (15 cm) nos logo cover with concrete kick block.

propane tank on the north side of Aalis Drive, 39.92 m (131.0 ft) WNW of a stop
sign at the driveway to the parking lot, 14.03 m (46.0 ft) SW of the center of
the double doors at the entrance to the Department of Natural Resources
building, 6.73 m (22.1 ft) east of a light pole, 2.75 m (9.0 ft) north of the
guard rail, 1.04 m (3.4 ft) above the concrete slab and 0.8 m (2.6 ft) below the
road.

The bench mark is a flange encased rod set in the grass NE of the Quinault
Indian Nation Health Center Building, 31.49 m (103.3 ft) east of north facing
counseling center door, 28.83 m (94.6 ft) NNE of east facing door, 25.33 m (83.1
ft) north of the light pole east of the building, 24.90 m (81.7 ft) east of the
light pole north of the building, 15.12 m (49.6 ft) ENE of a square storm drain,
11.22 m (36.8 ft) west of the top back of curb for the parking lot on the east
side of the building, and 11.13 m (36.5 ft) south of the top back of curb for
the parking lot on the north side of the building.  The datum point is set 8 cm
(3 inches) below grade being the top of a stainless steel rod driven 3.7 m (12.1
ft) to refusal, and encased in a 6-inch (15 cm) NOS logo cover.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed. The NGS's Integrated Data Base (IDB PID)
provides geodetic datum based on traditionally leveled and bluebooked ties to
the National Spatial Reference System(NSRS) https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/datasheets/.
The NGS Online Positioning User Service (OPUS PID) provides geodetic datum based
on GPS position & tie it to the NSRS https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/OPUS/.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
