To reach the tidal bench marks from the intersection of Harbor Boulevard and 6th
Street in San Pedro (Entrance to Port of Los Angeles Pier 35-72), turn left onto
22nd Street crossing railroad tracks for 0.3 km (0.2 mi) to Signal Street, turn
right onto Signal Street for 0.6 km (0.4 mi) to the end of Signal Street where
there is an office trailer (U.S. Water Taxi), turn right and go west for about
61 m (200 ft) to the station on the right at the end of the pier.  Tide gauges
are located in a small building at the SW end of pier (Berth 60).

flush in concrete at the south end of Signal Street at the SSW end of Berth 60,
23.77 m (78.0 ft) south of the SW corner of a transit shed, 7.92 m (26.0 ft) NE
of the SW corner of the pier, 0.91 m (3.0 ft) north of the south face of the
dock, and 0.06 m (0.2 ft) below the surface of the wharf.

south of the north edge of the foundation.

The bench mark is a disk located behind the US Water Taxi office at the southern
most end of Signal Street, in line with the extended centerline of Signal
Street, 47.24 m (155.0 ft) east of the SE corner of the tide station, 14.45 m
(47.4 ft) south of bench mark WILMINGTON D10B, and 0.99 m (3.3 ft) NE of a
telephone pole with an NGS witness post sign attached to it.  The bench mark is
crimped to a copper-clad steel rod driven 11.90 m (39.0 ft) and encased in a
4-inch PVC pipe with aluminum benchmark cover.

corner of the intersection, and 0.30 m (1.0 ft) SW of a metal witness post.  The
bench mark is set flush with the natural grade, crimped to the top of a
copper-clad steel rod driven 6.70 m (22.0 ft) and encased in a PVC pipe
extending 0.15 m (0.5 ft) above the mark.

The bench mark is a metal rod located on the SW side of San Pedro Slip in San
Pedro at the north end of a parking lot north of 22nd Street, 22.50 m (73.8 ft)
east of Sampson Way Street, 21.30 m (69.9 ft) south of SE corner of a small
building with a tile roof, and 7.10 m (23.3 ft) west of east end of a planter,
2.80 m (9.2 ft) SE of east end of the planter, 2.70 m (8.9 ft) SW of  the center
of a concrete light standard, and 1.26 m (4.1 ft) east of the west edge of the
dirt planter.  The datum point of the bench mark is the top of a metal rod
driven 22 m (72 ft) to refusal and encased in a 5-inch pipe with concrete
kickblock.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
