To reach the tidal bench marks from the intersection of Interstate 95 and
Broward Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale, proceed east on Broward Blvd. for 1.6 miles
(2.6 km) to Andrews Avenue, go south on Andrews Avenue for 0.2 mile (0.3 km) to
the Andrew Avenue bridge over New River.  The bench marks are located along New
River.  The tide gage and staff were located SW of the bridge in the Rodi Boat
Company yard near the railroad bridge.

The bench mark is set flush in the west side seawall of the SE Third Avenue
Bridge, just north of the Dresden Apartment building, 28 feet (9 m) north of the
centerline of South New River Drive East, 23 feet (7 m) south of the south river
bank, 14 feet (4 m) east of the west side of the bridge, and 0.5 foot (0.2 m)
above South New River Drive East.

The bench is set flush in the NE concrete bulkhead of the Andrews Avenue bridge,
69 feet (21 m) east of the centerline of South Andrews Avenue, 20 feet (6 m)
east of the east end of the steps leading to the bridge sidewalk, 12.5 feet (3.8
m) south of the south curb of North New River Drive, and 0.5 foot (0.2 m) above
the sidewalk level.

The bench mark is set in the top of a concrete seawall near the SE end of the
Andrews Avenue bridge, 60.0 feet (18.3 m) east of the centerline of South
Andrews Avenue, 34.8 feet (10.6 m) north of the centerline of South New River
Drive, and 9.8 feet (3.0 m) east of the east end of the steps to the bridge.

The bench mark is set in the concrete sidewalk at the NW end of the Andrews
Avenue bridge, 48 feet (15 m) south of the centerline of North New River Drive,
27.7 feet (8.4 m) west of the centerline of South Andrews Avenue, 18.5 feet (5.6
m) north of the north edge of the drawspan, 1 foot (0.3 m) east of the west
bridge bannister, and 1 foot (0.3 m) above the road surface.

(56 m) west of Bench Mark 2937 G 1981, 31.4 feet (9.6 m) east of the west end of
a bulkhead, 25.4 feet (7.7 m) north of the centerline of South New River Drive
East, 3.7 feet (1.1 m) north of the SW corner of a bridge support, and 0.4 foot
(0.1 m) west of the west side of the bridge support on the south side of the
river.

SW corner of the utility box.

The bench mark is 416 feet (127 m) SE of the SE corner of the Andrews Avenue
bridge support on the south side of New River, 275.6 feet (84.0 m) SE of Bench
Mark 2937 G 1981, 27.5 feet (8.4 m) NE of the centerline of South New River
Drive East, 26.8 feet (8.2 m) NW of the SW edge of a utility box, and 6.0 feet
(1.8 m) SW of a seawall and the waters edge.  The bench mark is the highest
point of a stainless steel rod in sleeve surrounded by a pipe with stamped
access cover.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
