Celebrating 200 Stations in 200 Years of Service

Tide Station at Mobile, AL NOAA is responsible for providing real-time data and other navigation products to promote safe and efficient navigation within the waters of the United States. Careful operation of the National Water Level Observation Network (NWLON) around the US coast and Great Lakes is a critical component of meeting this responsibility. In fact, 2007 marks the 200th anniversary of providing this service to the nation.

The NOAA Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS) installed the 200th NWLON water level station on Pier A at the Port of Alabama State Docks in April 2007. The State Docks station is a component of the Mobile Bay NOAA Physical Oceanographic Real-Time System (PORTS®) also being installed this year. Additionally, the station was installed as a cooperative effort with the US Army Corps of Engineers to upgrade some of their monitoring equipment and provide real-time data by radio for hydrographic surveying and dredging control. A commemorative bench mark was placed in Cooper Riverside Park. This mark and the other station bench marks in the area are tied into the National Spatial Reference System maintained by the National Geodetic Survey.

A ceremony will be held May 14, 2007 in Mobile to acknowledge the operational acceptance of NOAA's 200th National Water Level Observation Network station. Click here to return to the main Tides & Currents page.
